The Retirement Resort Choice

Today’s retirees have many housing choices that those in the past did not have.  Rather than simply retiring to a retirement home, retirees can now choose retirement resorts when seeking a new home at retirement.  However, retirement resorts are not for everyone because they come with a steep price tag.

What Is a Retirement Resort?

A retirement resort is a place where you can live when you retire.  However, unlike traditional retirement communities, a retirement resort has a resort-like atmosphere.  In a retirement resort, you will find facilities and activities that you would expect to find at a vacation resort.

If you choose to move to a retirement resort, you will be able to choose from a wide range of home types.  Many people choose to purchase their own single-family home as an investment.  This provides them with independence in their retirement as well.  Others choose to move to a resort that has condos or town homes available for sale or for rent.  Retirement resorts with cozy apartments can also be found.

What You Will Find in a Resort

If you choose to retire to a retirement resort, you can expect to find several amenities.  First, almost all retirement resorts are known for first-rate security.  You can expect to find security patrols and gated facilities at your chosen resort.

All resorts are slightly different in what they offer, so you will need to take some time to shop for the resort that best meets your needs.  You might be able to find retirement resorts + bar facilities, or you might find that the resort has many different classes to allow you to pursue your favorite hobbies.  It is not uncommon to find hairdressers, laundry facilities, a TV room, and a library at these types of facilities.  In fact, the design of these resorts often means that you never have to leave, because all your needs can be met on site.

Of course, if you are retiring to a warm climate, you can expect to find a pool at your chosen resort.  Exercise facilities are also common, and do not be surprised if they offer classes in the newest types of relaxation exercise, such as yoga and Pilates.  Other sports facilities, such as golf and tennis, are often found in these resorts.  Some even have medical facilities on site.

How Resorts Differ from Traditional Retirement Options

Of course, the amenities found at retirement resorts are the main way that they differ from traditional retirement options.  Few retirement homes are equipped with the level of luxury that is expected out of a retirement resort.  While retirement communities often have some amenities, they are not designed with the level of luxury that is found in a resort.

Another way that these two types of retirement facilities differ is in their price.  It is far more affordable to retire to a traditional retirement community than a resort.  While all the amenities of the resort make your retirement luxurious, they do come with a price.  Many retirees find that they simply cannot afford the resort lifestyle on what they have saved.  While you can purchase your own home in a resort, the cost of that home will be far higher than a similar home that is not part of a resort.  Also, you will have to pay yearly or monthly fees for the amenities that the resort offers.

Some retirement communities, specifically retirement homes, force the retiree to become dependent on the staff of the home.  Resorts are different.  They encourage an active, independent lifestyle for their residents.  The staff is available when assistance is needed, but most retirees enjoy an independent lifestyle when they retire to a resort.

Retirement resorts tend to appear in areas where wealthy retirees tend to want to live.  Florida, Arizona, and Texas are all states that have many resorts for older adults.  In fact, most states have some resort options for retirees.  There are even retirement resorts in Alaska!  Because these resorts are for the wealthy retiree, many of them can be found outside of the country as well.  Thailand, India, and the Caribbean Islands all have retirement resorts.

Who Should Retire in a Resort?

Anyone can retire in a resort, provided they have the money to do so.  If a retiree has saved enough money to afford the fees of the resort and still have enough money to live on, then that individual should consider retiring to a resort.  Those who would find it difficult to purchase their day-to-day necessities should consider a different retirement community option.
